ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Laulau

Laulau is a yummy traditional Hawaiian dish that's made with meat and taro leaves. The meat could be pork, chicken, or fish. But, before the meat is cooked, it is first marinated in delicious spices and seasonings.

Now, the taro leaves that are used to wrap the meat have a really important job. They help to hold everything together, like a hug in a blanket. First, the leaves are washed and cleaned. Next, they are steamed until they become nice and soft. Then, a few leaves are layered on top of each other to make a big, green square.

After that, you take a spoonful of the marinated meat and put it inside the square, right in the middle. It's important to make sure that the meat fills up most of the space. Finally, the taro leaves are wrapped up really tightly around the meat until it looks like a little green package.

Now, the laulau is ready to be cooked! It's either steamed in a steamer basket, baked in an oven, or grilled over hot coals. The steam helps the meat get super tender and juicy, and the flavors from the marinade soak into the whole thing. When it's done, you open up the package, and you've got a delicious meal inside!

Laulau isn't just yummy, but it's also an important part of Hawaiian culture. It's been made for hundreds of years, using the same recipe and methods. And now, you too know the secret to making it!
