ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Laura Mulvey

Laura Mulvey is a lady who made a big impact on how people think about movies. She told us that most movies are made by men and for men, which means that women are often shown in a way that is not fair or equal. She called this thing "The Male Gaze". It’s like the camera follows the ideas and feelings of a man and makes them the center of the story. That means a woman is shown as an object to be looked at, not as a real person with feelings, thoughts, and ideas. She explained that this way of seeing women in movies is a problem because it can make girls and women feel bad about themselves and make it hard for them to see themselves as strong and valuable.

Mulvey even explained that this way of viewing women in movies is part of a bigger cultural problem where men are often seen as "better" and more important than women. To fix this issue, Mulvey said that we must work together to create movies and other media that show women in a fair and equal way that tells their stories too. This is vital because movies have a vast influence on how kids and adults see things, and it's necessary to make sure everyone feels valued and represented.
