Lead abatement is like when mom and dad clean up the house because they don't want anybody to get sick from something in the air or on the floor. But instead of cleaning toys and clothes and dishes, lead abatement is cleaning up something called lead that can make people very sick.
Lead is a metal that was used a long time ago in things like paint and pipes. But it's not safe to have around anymore because if you breathe it in or eat it, it can hurt your brain and body. So if people find out that there is lead in a building, they hire people to do lead abatement.
Lead abatement workers wear special clothes and masks to protect themselves from the lead. They start by testing to see where the lead is and how much there is. Then they come up with a plan to get rid of the lead safely. Sometimes they have to take out things like windows or walls that have lead in them. Other times they have to clean up dust or dirt that has lead in it.
After all of the lead is gone, the workers test the area again to make sure it is safe. Then people can go back into the building without worrying that they will get sick from the lead.
