Legacies of apartheid are the effects or problems that remain even after apartheid ended in South Africa in 1994. Apartheid was a system of laws and policies that made it so that people with lighter skin had more privileges than people with darker skin. This system created a lot of unfairness and inequalities between people that are still felt today. For example, many people who were not given access to the same education and job opportunities during the apartheid still face difficulties getting an education or finding a job. People living in areas that were separated during the apartheid times often don’t have access to the same quality of healthcare and educational opportunities. These inequalities continue to make life harder for many people of color in South Africa today.
