ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Legality of conversion therapy

Ok kiddo, so sometimes there are people who feel like they are different from other people because of who they love or how they feel about their own gender. This is perfectly okay and there are lots of people who understand and accept these differences.

But some people think that these differences are not okay and might try to change the way that these people feel. They might suggest that they go to something called "conversion therapy" to try and make them feel more "normal".

Now, the thing is, conversion therapy is not a good thing. In fact, it can be really harmful. It can make people feel ashamed of who they are and can even cause them to develop mental health issues later on in life.

That's why in many places, including some states in the United States, conversion therapy has been banned. This means that it is no longer allowed for anyone to force someone else to try and change their feelings about who they love or how they identify themselves.

So, just remember that everyone is different and that's what makes us all special. Nobody should ever feel like they have to change who they are because someone else thinks they should. And that's why conversion therapy is not okay.
