ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Lens speed

You know how we use our eyes to see things, right? And sometimes when we're looking at something, it might look blurry or too dark. That's because our eyes need enough light to see things clearly.

Now, imagine you have a special camera that also needs enough light to take a good picture. The camera has something called a lens that helps to focus the light onto a special sensor that captures the picture.

The "speed" of the lens is how good it is at letting in light. Just like when we open our eyes wider in the dark to see better, the lens can open wider to let in more light. When a lens can let in a lot of light, we say it has a fast speed. When it can't let in as much light, we say it has a slow speed.

So, having a lens with a fast speed is important because it means the camera can take better pictures in darker places or when things are moving really fast. Kind of like having superpowers to see in the dark or catch things that are too fast to normally see!
