ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Lepontic language

Lepontic language is like a secret code that some people used a very long time ago to talk to each other. Back then, there were different groups of people living in what we now call Europe, and they didn't all speak the same language. So they sometimes made up their own language to talk to each other and keep their conversations private.

Lepontic language was one of those made-up languages. It was spoken by a group of people called the Lepontii who lived in what is now Switzerland and Italy about 2,500 years ago. We don't know exactly how they spoke, since nobody has been able to find any recordings or writings in Lepontic language. But some clever people have studied other ancient languages that were similar to Lepontic, and they think they have a good idea of what it sounded like.

Lepontic language was probably made up of words and sounds that were different from the languages that other people spoke in that area at the time. So if you knew Lepontic, you could talk to other people who knew it too, and nobody else would understand what you were saying. It was like having a secret code!

Today, nobody speaks Lepontic language anymore, so it's kind of like a mystery from a long time ago that we're still trying to solve. But by studying how it was used and what other languages it was related to, we can learn a lot about the people who spoke it and the world they lived in.
