Lesley Milroy is a person who studies how people talk to each other. Imagine you have a friend that talks differently than you. Maybe they use different words, or say things in a different way than you do. Milroy is interested in why that happens, and how it can affect the way we communicate with each other.
To study this, Milroy goes to different places where people talk differently. She listens to how they talk and asks them questions about their language. She is also interested in how people’s social groups can affect the way they speak. For example, if you hang out with your classmates, you might start using words or phrases they use, without even realizing it. This is called being influenced by your social group.
Milroy’s work helps us understand more about how people use language to communicate, and how our surroundings and who we spend time with can influence the way we talk.
