They make sure the words are easy to read and look pretty. They use different styles and colors to make the words stand out and look cool.
Just like how you practice your handwriting, letterers practice writing letters in different styles until they're really good at it. And then they use that skill to make words look awesome in comics, TV shows, movies, and sometimes even books!
