Light harvesting materials

Light harvesting materials are like tiny sponges that can absorb light waves and turn them into energy. Think of them like a plant's leaves- plants use their leaves to collect sunlight and turn it into energy through a process called photosynthesis. Similarly, light harvesting materials can absorb different parts of the light spectrum and transform it into useful energy.

These materials are made up of tiny units called chromophores. Think of chromophores like little light magnets- they attract certain wavelengths of light and hold onto them. The more chromophores a material has, the better it is at absorbing light.

When light is absorbed by these materials, it causes the excitation of electrons- like when you jump on a trampoline, only with tiny particles. The excited electrons then move through the material and can be captured by a device that converts it into usable energy, like a solar cell.

Scientists are extremely interested in light harvesting materials because they have the potential to revolutionize the way we generate energy. By harnessing the power of the sun, we can reduce our reliance on nonrenewable energy sources and create a more sustainable future.
