A liquid-propellant rocket is a big machine that can fly really high up into the sky or even into space. It works by using different liquids that are mixed together and then set on fire. The burning mixture creates a lot of really hot gas, and this gas needs to go somewhere. Since it can't go sideways or up or down, it shoots out of the bottom of the rocket, pushing it upwards. This is why the rocket has a nozzle at the bottom where the hot gas comes out.
When the fuel runs out, the rocket can't fly anymore and it falls back to the ground. That's why rockets are usually sent up with a payload or things to deliver, like satellites, astronauts or equipment.
