Literature in the other languages of Britain

Hey kiddo, did you know that in Great Britain there are lots of different languages spoken besides English? And did you also know that people have been writing stories, poems, and books in these languages for a very long time? That's what we call "literature in the other languages of Britain."

Let's start with Welsh. Welsh is a language spoken in Wales, a part of Great Britain. People have been writing in Welsh for over a thousand years! They used to write on animal skin using ink made from plants, but now they use paper and computers. Welsh literature includes stories about heroes, historical events, and even some funny jokes! Some famous Welsh writers include Dylan Thomas and R.S. Thomas.

Another language spoken in Great Britain is Scots. Scots is a language that is similar to English, but it's not the same. Some people say it's a completely different language! People have been writing in Scots for hundreds of years. Some famous Scots writers include Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott.

Then there's Irish. Irish is a language spoken in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Irish literature includes lots of poetry, stories, and plays. People have been writing in Irish for over a thousand years! Some famous Irish writers include Samuel Beckett and James Joyce.

Finally, we have Cornish. Cornish is a language spoken in Cornwall, a part of Great Britain. People started writing in Cornish back in the 14th century, but the language almost died out in the 18th century. Thankfully, lots of people worked hard to bring it back and now there are even new books being written in Cornish! Some famous Cornish writers include Nicholas Williams and Ray Edwards.

So as you can see, there are lots of different languages spoken in Great Britain and lots of different types of literature written in those languages!
