ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Livestock's Long Shadow

Livestock's long shadow refers to the large amount of land and resources that are used to produce animal products like meat, eggs and milk. To produce these foods, we have to feed animals like cows, sheep, pigs and chickens. This means that they need a lot of space to live in and lots of food to eat. They also produce a lot of waste, like poop and pee, that can cause pollution. All of this takes up a lot of land and resources that could be used for other things like growing crops to eat or providing a habitat for wild animals. The long shadow of livestock means that we are using a lot of resources to raise these animals that could be used for something else.
