ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Living will

Imagine that you are growing up and becoming an adult. You learn about responsibilities and making important decisions, like what kind of job you want to have or where you want to live.

Now imagine that when you become very old, your body doesn't work as well as it used to, and you get sick. Sometimes, people get so sick that they cannot make decisions for themselves anymore. This is where a living will comes in.

A living will is like a plan you make when you are healthy and able to make decisions. It tells doctors and your family what you want to happen if you can't make decisions for yourself. It says things like whether you want to use machines to help you breathe or eat if you can't do it on your own. It can also say what kind of treatments you don't want to receive if they don't seem like they're helping you get better.

A living will is important so that your family and doctors know what you want to happen. It helps them make decisions that are what you would have chosen if you could still talk and think clearly. You can talk to your parents or a lawyer to help you create a living will that says what you want to happen if you ever become very sick and can't make decisions for yourself anymore.
