ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Local government in England

Okay, so you know how in school you have a teacher and they make rules for the class, like when it's time to sit down and when it's okay to talk? Well, imagine your whole town or city is like a really big class and the teachers are the people who work for the government.

These teachers, who are called councillors, are elected by the people who live in the town or city. They are in charge of making rules that help everyone who lives there, like fixing potholes in the roads, making sure the parks are clean, and providing services like trash collection and libraries.

Sometimes, different areas within a town or city need different things or have different problems, so the councillors break the town or city up into smaller parts called wards or boroughs. Each ward or borough has its own councillor or group of councillors who work together to make sure their area gets what it needs.

So, just like your teacher helps make your classroom a good place to learn, your councillors help make your town or city a good place to live. And by voting for the councillors you think will do the best job, you get to help decide how the town or city is run.
