ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Logic alphabet

Hey kiddo!

Do you know what the alphabet is? It’s a group of letters that we use to make words and sentences.

Well, in the world of logic, there’s a special alphabet that we use to make logical statements. It’s called the logic alphabet!

Instead of letters like “A, B, C,” the logic alphabet uses special symbols to represent different things.

For example, the symbol “∨” means “or.” So if we have two statements like “It’s raining outside” and “The sun is shining,” we can combine them using the “or” symbol like this: “It’s raining outside ∨ The sun is shining.” This means that either it’s raining or the sun is shining.

Another symbol you might see is “¬” which means “not.” So if we have a statement like “I love ice cream,” we can make a negative version by adding the “not” symbol: “¬I love ice cream.” This means that I don’t love ice cream.

There are also symbols for “and” (which looks like “∧”), “implication” (which looks like “→”), and “if and only if” (which looks like “↔”). Each symbol has its own special meaning that we use to make logical statements.

So that’s the logic alphabet! It’s like the regular alphabet, but instead of letters, we use special symbols to make logical statements.
