Lustration in Poland

Lustration is a big word that means checking who worked with the old government in Poland before 1989. In 1989, Poland stopped being a communist country and became a democracy. But, some people who worked for the communist government still had powerful jobs in the new government. People were worried that these people might still support the old government's ideas and might not be good for the new democracy.

So, to make sure that the new government only had good people working for it, they made a rule that everyone who wanted to work in a government job had to say if they had any connections to the old communist government. If they did, they had to stop working in a government job for 10 years. This was called "lustration".

The aim of lustration was to make sure that only honest and trustworthy people were working in the government so that the new democracy could run smoothly. It was like cleaning up the closet to get rid of anything that might cause a problem in the future.
