Maceration (wine)

Maceration is a fancy word for soaking something in liquid to make it taste different. Maceration is like when you put your teabag in hot water and let it soak to make tea.

In winemaking, maceration is when they take the grape juice and let it soak with the skins, seeds, and stems for a little while before they start making the wine. This helps to make the wine taste good and gives it a special color.

When the grape juice is soaking with the skin, the juice absorbs different flavors and colors from the skins. It's like when you soak strawberries in sugar water to make them sweeter and juicier. The longer the juice sits with the skins, the more flavor it will absorb.

Once the juice has soaked enough, the winemakers will then start making the wine by fermenting the juice. This means they add special yeast that helps turn the juice into alcohol. The color and flavors from the skin will mix with the juice during this process, which will make the wine taste really good!
