ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Mail delivery by animal

Have you ever seen a dog with a little bag around its neck, going from house to house delivering letters? Well, it might not be exactly like that, but a long time ago, people actually used animals like horses, dogs, and even pigeons to deliver letters and packages!

They would put the letter or package in a little bag or basket and attach it to the animal. The animal would then travel to the recipient's house, where the bag was removed and delivered to the recipient.

This was a very helpful way of getting messages across long distances, especially in places where it was hard for humans to travel quickly. For example, back in the olden days, there weren't very many cars or trains, and roads were often bumpy and hard to travel on. But animals like horses were very good at traveling long distances quickly and could carry a lot of letters and packages at once.

Pigeons were especially good at delivering messages quickly. They would carry little tubes with messages inside and would be released from one location. Then, they would fly back to their home, carrying the message with them.

Of course, nowadays, we have much faster and more efficient ways of sending mail, like email and texting. But it's still pretty cool to think about how animals used to help us communicate with each other!
