Major Diagnostic Category

Okay kiddo, do you know what a category is? It’s like putting things that are alike in the same group. Now, a major diagnostic category (MDC) is just like that but in the medical world.

Doctors use MDCs to group together diseases or conditions that are similar. For example, there is a group for problems with your heart, like heart attacks or heart disease. Another group is for problems with your lungs, like pneumonia or asthma.

Why do doctors use MDCs? Because it helps them make better decisions about how to treat their patients. If they know what group a patient’s problem falls in, they know what kinds of tests to run and what treatments to try first.

So, when someone goes to the hospital, their diagnosis is put into an MDC group. This helps the doctors give the best care possible and get the patient healthy again!
