Mal de debarquement

Mal de Debarquement (MdD), also known as Disembarkment Syndrome, is a feeling of unsteadiness or rocking sensation that usually occurs after getting off a boat, ship, or other types of motion-based transportation. Imagine how you feel after jumping on a trampoline for a long time then getting off; the feeling that your body is still bouncing even though you are standing still.

MdD happens when the balance system in our inner ear gets confused. Our inner ear helps us balance and coordinate our movements. When we are in constant motion, like on a boat, our inner ear and brain will adjust to the movement. However, when we get off the boat, our inner ear is still telling our brain that we are moving, while our eyes are telling our brain that we are standing still. This is confusing to our brain, and it causes the feeling that we are still swaying or rocking.

MdD can last for hours, days, or even months, and it can come and go for many years. Other symptoms include headaches, dizziness, and sensitivity to light and sound. The sensation can be improved by keeping hydrated, getting enough rest, and reducing stress.

MdD can be challenging, but it is not a serious condition. If you experience this, it is important to take it easy, relax and give your body enough time to adjust back to the normal sensation of being on land. Additionally, it is essential to seek the advice of a healthcare professional if you experience severe and persistent symptoms.
