ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Malaysia Internet Blackout Day (2012)

Hey there kiddo! Do you remember how sometimes when you play with your toys, your parents ask you to stop doing something because it's not safe or good for you? Well, sometimes people do that too but on a bigger scale.

In Malaysia, some people were upset with the government because they thought the government was being mean to some other people. These upset people decided to organize something called an "internet blackout day" where they would not use the internet for one whole day to show the government how angry they were.

Now, the internet it like a big playground where people can talk to each other, learn things and have fun. But sometimes, when a lot of people try to use the internet all at the same time, it can create a big traffic jam. That's why some people were worried that if too many people stopped using the internet all at once, it could break the internet and no one would be able to use it for a while.

So, even though the people organizing the blackout day were really angry and wanted to show it, they decided not to do it because it could hurt the internet and that wouldn't be good for anyone. Does that make sense, little one?
