ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Malcolm W. Klein

Malcolm W. Klein is a person who studies crime and why people commit crimes. He likes to figure out why some people are more likely to commit crimes than others. He also looks at how people behave in groups, like gangs, and how they might be different from people who don't belong to a group like that.

Imagine you are playing with your friends outside, and someone takes your toy without asking. That's not nice, right? Now imagine if someone took your toy every time you played outside. You might start feeling angry and frustrated, and you might want to take something back from them. This is kind of how gangs work, except they do more serious things like stealing, hurting people, and selling drugs.

Mr. Klein wants to understand why some people might join a gang and what makes them different from people who don't. He also tries to figure out why some neighborhoods have more crime than others. Maybe there are fewer jobs, more poverty or more drug addiction in those areas? He looks at things like that to see what might be causing crime to happen.

In short, Mr. Klein is someone who studies why people commit crimes and how we can prevent crime from happening in our communities.
