Male as norm

"Male as norm" means that our society often makes certain assumptions based on the idea that men, or males, are the standard, or norm, against which other genders are compared. For example, it can mean that when people talk about a leader, they usually picture a man in that role, or when people talk about a doctor, they usually picture a man in that role. This is because for a long time, it was more common for men to have those jobs, so maybe people think it's normal for men to have them.
