ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Male breast cancer

Just like girls, boys have a type of body part called breasts. However, because boys have less of a certain hormone called estrogen, they usually do not grow very big.

Sometimes, just like in girls, boys can get a type of sickness called breast cancer. This happens when some cells in the boy's breast start to grow and multiply in a bad way, and form a lump called a tumor. The tumor can be very small or very big, and it can hurt or not hurt at all.

Breast cancer in boys is not very common, but it can still happen. People with breast cancer might notice some changes in their breasts, like a lump, swelling, redness or skin dimpling. If a boy has any of these things or other types of changes in his breast, he should tell someone he trusts, like his parents or doctor, so they can help him go to the doctor and find out if he has breast cancer or not.

Doctors can test for breast cancer in a few different ways, such as taking a mammogram, which is like a special picture of the breast, or doing a biopsy, which is when the doctor takes a tiny piece of tissue from the breast and looks at it under a microscope.

If someone is found to have breast cancer, there are different ways to treat it, including surgery to remove the tumor, radiation therapy to kill any cancer cells left behind, and medication to help stop the cancer from growing or spreading. It might take a while to get better, but with help from doctors and loved ones, people can beat breast cancer and live a long and healthy life.
