Mamluk carpets

Oh hello there! Today we are going to learn about mamluk carpets.

So, a long time ago in Egypt, there were these people called Mamluks who were really good at making carpets. They figured out how to make these beautiful carpets with lots of different colors and intricate patterns.

To make a mamluk carpet, first they had to get lots of wool from sheep. Then, they would clean and comb it to make it nice and soft.

Next, they would dye the wool different colors using plants and other natural things they found around them. They could make colors like red, blue, green, and yellow.

Once they had all the dyed wool, they would tie little knots in it and make a pattern on a large canvas. This was very hard work and took a lot of time and patience!

Finally, once the whole carpet was finished, it would be cut off the canvas and could be used to decorate someone's home or even given as a gift to a friend.

Mamluk carpets are really special because they show us how people used to use their creativity and resources to make something beautiful. So anytime you see a pretty carpet, you can think about the Mamluks and their amazing artwork!
