ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Managerial prerogative

Okay, imagine you’re playing with some toys with your friend. You get to decide which toy you want to play with first, and then your friend gets to decide which toy they want to play with next. That’s kind of like how a boss gets to decide what needs to be done at work.

Managerial prerogative is a big word that means the boss gets to make decisions about how things are done at work. Just like you get to choose which toy to play with, the boss gets to choose which tasks need to be done and who does them. The boss also gets to make other decisions, like who gets to work on a project and who gets to take a break.

It’s important to remember that the boss can’t make decisions that are unfair or illegal. But just like you and your friend take turns choosing toys, the boss gets to make the decisions at work.
