Mandal Commission protests of 1990
In 1990, there was a big protest, kind of like when you get really angry about something and want to show everybody how mad you are. This protest was because of something called the Mandal Commission. The Mandal Commission wanted to make sure that people who aren't rich or from important families could also have a chance to get good jobs.
Lots of people didn't like this idea because they thought that it would make it harder for people from rich families to get those good jobs. They were worried that people who worked hard and were really smart wouldn't get the jobs they deserved just because they weren't from a rich family.
People who were against the Mandal Commission started protesting by doing something called a "rail roko", where they stopped trains from running. This made it hard for people to travel and do their jobs, so the government got really worried.
The protests got bigger and bigger, with lots of people joining in and also stopping buses and blocking roads. The government tried to talk to the protesters and find a solution, but it took some time to come to an agreement.
Eventually, a compromise was made, and some parts of the Mandal Commission were implemented, but not all. Some people were still unhappy but the government did what they thought was best for the country.
