ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Mao (game)

Mao is a card game that is played by following a set of rules that can be confusing and tricky at first. The object of the game is to get rid of all your cards before the other players do. The game is played with a standard deck of cards and the rules can vary from game to game.

Each player is dealt a hand of cards and the game begins with the person to the left of the dealer. The player will start by placing down one card from their hand face up on the table. Here comes the tricky part: the other players are not allowed to play a card that matches the suit or number of the card that was just played. Instead, the other players have to play a card that is the next highest or next lowest number, or a card that is the same color.

For example, if someone played a King of Spades, the next player cannot play a Spade or a King. Instead, they would have to play a card that is either a higher or lower number than the King, but must still be the same suit. If they don't have a card that fits, they have to draw a card from the deck.

To make things more complicated, there are a set of rules that people must follow during the game. These rules are not shared with players before the game starts, and are usually made up by the group playing the game. These rules might be things like "You can't say 'draw' or 'Mao'" or "You have to clap before playing a two." If someone breaks a rule, they can be penalized by having to draw extra cards or even skipping a turn.

The game ends when someone has played all their cards. Then, the other players add up the remaining cards in their hands and that number is added to their score. The game can then be restarted with a new dealer and new rules.

Overall, Mao is a fun and challenging card game that requires players to think quickly and be sneaky. Just be prepared to learn new rules every time you play!
