Marathons at the Paralympics

Okay kiddo, the Paralympics is a big sports event where athletes with disabilities from all over the world compete in different sports. And one of the sports that they compete in is called marathons.

A marathon is a really long race, like running around the block but a LOT of times. For Paralympic marathons, the distance is 42.195 kilometers or 26.2 miles, which is really far!

But not every athlete can run the marathon the same way. Some athletes might use a wheelchair or a special device to help them run because they have physical disabilities that make it hard to run with their legs.

So the race has different categories based on the type of disability, so everyone can compete against athletes who are like them. For example, an athlete who uses a wheelchair will compete in a different category than an athlete who only has a prosthetic leg.

The athletes have to train really hard to build up their strength and endurance so they can finish the marathon. But the most important thing is that they have fun and do their best because the Paralympics is all about showing that no matter what challenges you face, you can still achieve great things!
