ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Marie-Joseph Angélique

Marie-Joseph Angélique was a person who lived over 300 years ago. She was a woman living in Canada at the time and she was a Black slave. She was accused of starting a fire in Montreal in 1734, and she was found guilty and executed (killed). This was seen as a horrible injustice at the time because they punished her more severely than others who were also accused of starting the fire, and because it was an unfair trial. People remember her today because she stands for believing in justice and fairness in our lives.
