ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Marriage gap

Do you remember when we learned about marriage, which is when two people promise to be together forever? Well, sometimes people who are married are not the same as each other. For example, maybe one partner is very rich and the other partner is not as rich. Or maybe one partner has gone to school for a long time and has a really good job, while the other partner doesn't have as good a job.

When we talk about the "marriage gap," we mean that certain groups of people are more likely to be married than others. For example, people who have a lot of money and who have gone to school for a long time are more likely to be married than people who don't have as much money or who haven't gone to school for as long.

There are many different reasons why this might be the case. For example, some people might feel like they need to be financially secure before they get married, so they might wait until they have a good job and some savings. Other people might live in areas where it's harder to find a partner who has the same values and goals as they do.

The marriage gap is important to think about because being married can affect many different aspects of a person's life. For example, people who are married tend to be healthier and happier than people who are not married. Married people also tend to have more money and better job opportunities than people who are not married. So, if certain groups of people are less likely to get married, they might be missing out on some of these benefits. It's important to think about ways to help all people have access to the benefits of marriage, no matter who they are or where they come from.
