ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Marriage privatization

Hi kiddo, do you remember when we talked about how mommy and daddy signed papers to get married? Well, some grown-ups are thinking about changing how people get married. They want it to be like buying a toy from the store.

So, some people believe that the government shouldn't be the only ones who can make rules about how people get married. They think that getting married should be like buying a toy from the store. You go to a store and buy the toy you like, and then you bring it home to play with it. Just like that, they want to make it so that people can choose how they want to get married and then they can do it.

Under this idea, people can decide on their own what is important to them in marriage, what benefits and responsibilities they want, and who they want to be in charge of their relationships. And just like when you buy a toy, you get to choose what rules you want to follow while playing with it.

Some people believe that if marriage was privatized, it would make things simpler and save people a lot of money. But not everyone agrees with this idea, and there are many discussions happening about it. So, whether or not this idea becomes a reality is still up for debate.
