ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Martian canals

The Martian canals were once believed to be long, straight lines on the surface of Mars that looked like canals. People thought these canals were made by Martians, who lived on the planet, in order to transport water from one place to another.

However, later we learned that these canals were not real but were simply an optical illusion. That means they only looked like canals, but they weren't. It's similar to how, when you look at a piece of candy through a glass of water, the candy may appear bent, but it's not actually.

Scientists used telescopes to study Mars, and they found that the lines on the planet's surface were actually just natural features, like valleys, ridges, or cracks. The human brain likes to see patterns, and sometimes it sees things that aren't really there, like faces in the clouds or animals in a rock formation.

People no longer believe in the Martian canals, but they're still interesting to talk about because they show how our understanding of the universe has evolved over time. We continue to learn new things about the planets, stars, and galaxies, and we may one day discover other signs of life beyond Earth!
