ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Martin v. Mott

Okay, so imagine you and your friend have a toy car that you like to play with in the park. One day, another friend shows up and asks to play with your toy car. You and your friend don't want to share, so you say no. The other friend gets upset and goes to tell an adult, let's call him Mr. Mott.

Now, Mr. Mott is supposed to make sure everyone is safe and happy in the park. He sees that you and your friend are not sharing your toy car and tells you that you have to let the other friend play with it too. But you and your friend still don't want to share.

So, Mr. Mott tells your parents, who are in charge of you and your friend. Your parents say that they will handle it and they tell you and your friend that you have to share the toy car or you won't be able to play in the park anymore.

This is kind of like what happened in Martin v. Mott, except instead of a toy car in the park, it was a ferry that carried people and goods across a river. Mr. Mott was in charge of the ferry and the government said that he had to let everyone use it, even if some people didn't want to share. Martin, who owned the ferry, didn't want to share because he thought it would hurt his business.

So, Martin sued Mr. Mott and said that he shouldn't have to let everyone use the ferry. But the court said that Mr. Mott was just doing his job to make sure everyone was safe and happy, kind of like how your parents told you to share the toy car. And so, Mr. Mott was allowed to keep doing his job and making sure everyone could use the ferry.
