ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Mass versus weight

Imagine you have a big bowl of candy. Mass is a way of measuring how much candy is in the bowl. Weight is how heavy the bowl feels when you hold it.

But wait! If you take the bowl of candy to the moon, the mass of the candy doesn't change - it's still the same amount of candy. However, the weight of the bowl of candy on the moon is different than on Earth because the gravity is different.

So, the main difference between mass and weight is that mass is the amount of matter something contains, while weight is the measure of how heavy something is, based on how hard gravity is pulling on it. Mass remains the same no matter where you are, while weight can change depending on the gravity present.
