Have you ever seen a friend get a toy or a snack and suddenly you wanted the same thing too? That's kind of what happens when animals choose their mates. Sometimes, they look for cues from other animals to decide who they want to mate with. This is known as mate choice copying.
Let's say a female bird is trying to find a mate. She watches other female birds and sees who they choose to mate with. If she sees a lot of other female birds choosing to mate with a particular male bird, she might copy them and choose to mate with him as well. This is because she thinks that if all the other female birds like him, he must be a good choice for a mate.
This behavior is not just limited to birds, other animals like fish or mammals also engage in mate choice copying. Even humans do it unconsciously when they observe other people choosing their partners.
So, just like how you might want the same toy as your friend or choose the same food as your sibling, animals sometimes copy the choices of other animals when it comes to choosing their mate!
