ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

MaxDiff

Maxdiff, or maximum difference scaling, is when we try to understand which things are more or less important or preferred by people. It's like when you have to pick your favorite food or color, but it's not just one thing - it's a bunch of things!

So, imagine you had a big jar of jelly beans with 10 different flavors. You want to know which flavors are the most popular and which ones are not that liked. Maxdiff helps you figure this out.

The way it works is you show people different combinations of these jelly bean flavors and ask which one they like better. You would show the person two groups of jelly beans at a time and ask which group they prefer. For example, you might show one group that has five flavors (grape, cherry, apple, watermelon and mango) and another that has the other five flavors (blueberry, orange, strawberry, pineapple and lemon).

After several of these kinds of questions, we can use some math to figure out which flavors are the most popular and which ones are not as much. This helps companies or researchers understand what people like and can help them make better decisions.
