Maya codices

Imagine you are playing a game of hide-and-seek with your friends. You decide to write down some clues or hints to give them, so that they can find you easily. This is kind of what the Maya people did a long time ago with the Maya codices.

Maya codices were like little books made out of bark paper, and the Maya people used them to write down stories, myths, and important information about their culture. They even used them to create maps and calendars.

The Maya codices were made by cutting and folding the bark paper into pages, and then binding them together into a book. The Maya people then wrote or painted pictures on the pages using symbols and signs that represented words and ideas.

The Maya people recorded things like the lives of their kings, the dates of important celebrations, and even things like how to grow crops and make medicine.

Today, only four Maya codices have survived. They are considered extremely valuable because they give us a glimpse into one of the most ancient and complex civilizations in the Americas. They also tell us about the ways in which different cultures record and share their knowledge.
