ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Mechanical wave

A mechanical wave is a type of wave that moves physical matter, like air and water, from place to place. It's like a ripple on a pond. Just like a stone dropped into the water makes ripples, a mechanical wave can carry energy when it moves through something like water or air. The energy carries information and can tell us things about what is happening in the world around us. For example, sound travels in mechanical waves so we can hear things around us.
