Medieval singlewomen were women who were not married during the Middle Ages. Women who were single had more freedom than married women, and were able to own and inherit property, make their own business deals, and choose their own husbands. Women could also choose to become nuns and take religious vows, living in monasteries and convents, where they could devote their lives to prayer and helping others. Single women had to work hard and were often skilled at housework and crafts, like weaving and spinning, which provided income. Single women were also needed to help out on farms, where they might help with herding, planting, harvesting, and other tasks.
