ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Meinong's jungle

Meinong's jungle is an imaginary place that some people use to explain a tricky problem in philosophy. Imagine a big jungle full of all kinds of creatures - lions, tigers, bears, birds, insects, and even some made-up creatures like unicorns and dragons.

Now, let's say someone asked you the question "how many lions are in Meinong's jungle?" That's a tough question to answer because Meinong's jungle isn't a real place! It's just an idea in someone's head. So, does it make sense to even ask how many lions are there?

This is called the problem of non-existence. It means that sometimes we talk about things as if they are real, but they don't actually exist in the world outside of our thoughts. And when we talk about those things, we can get into confusing situations like trying to count the lions in Meinong's jungle.

In philosophy, some people use Meinong's jungle as an example of this problem. They say that just because something doesn't exist in reality, that doesn't mean we can't talk about it or have thoughts about it. But we have to be careful not to confuse our thoughts with reality.

So, next time someone asks you how many lions are in Meinong's jungle, you can say "Well, it's not a real place, so there aren't any lions there. But we can still talk about it and imagine what it might be like."
