ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Metacommunicative competence

Metacommunicative competence is a fancy way of saying understanding how to communicate effectively. It's all about understanding the rules of communication and using them to get the message across. It means knowing how to use the right words and be polite, making sure that the speaker and listener are both on the same page, and being able to present ideas or facts in an understandable way. If you are good at metacommunicative competence, you will be able to communicate with people in a respectful and clear manner, and make sure that everyone understands the message.
