ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Metal amides

Okay kiddo, so you know how metals are things like shiny gold or silver that can conduct electricity and bend into different shapes, right? Well, metal amides are when we take one of those metals (let’s say sodium) and combine it with nitrogen to make something called a metal amide (in this case, sodium amide).

Now, you might remember from science class that nitrogen is a gas we breathe in the air around us, but when we take it and combine it with a metal, it makes a solid. That solid metal amide can be really useful because it can do things like help reactions happen faster, or even act as a reducing agent (which is a fancy way of saying it can take away oxygen from other molecules).

Overall, metal amides are just a way of taking two things we know (metals and nitrogen) and putting them together in a way that helps us do cool new things in science!
