Metamorphic rocks

So, imagine you have a cake. First, you mix all the ingredients together and put it in the oven to bake. Now, what happens when you take that same cake and stick it in the freezer? It gets hard and you can't really eat it anymore, right?

Well, rocks are kind of like cakes. They are made up of different things like minerals, and they can change over time. Sometimes, rocks get pushed down really deep underground where they get really hot and squished. This squishing and heating is called "metamorphism".

When a rock goes through metamorphism, it changes in different ways. It might get harder and more compact, or it might get softer and flakier. It can also change colors or have new minerals grow inside of it. Just like a cake in the freezer, a rock that has gone through metamorphism is no longer the same as it was before.

Some examples of metamorphic rocks are marble, which was once a type of rock called limestone, and slate, which was once mud at the bottom of the ocean. These rocks are really cool because they have gone through a lot of changes to become what they are today. And studying them can help us learn about the earth's history!
