ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Metaphony (Romance languages)

Metaphony is like a special way that some words in romance languages change their sounds to show different meanings. It's like when you play with your voice to make silly sounds or sing a song with different notes.

Let's take the word "piedra" which means "stone" in Spanish. When we add an "i" in front of it, it becomes "piedrita" which means "little stone". Do you hear how the "e" sound in "piedra" has changed to an "i" sound in "piedrita"? That's metaphony!

But it's not just adding a letter that changes the sound. In other words like "mesa" (table), if we add an "i" to the end, it becomes "mesita" (little table) but the "e" sound doesn't change. Instead, the "a" sound changes to an "i" sound in "mesita."

Metaphony can be a little tricky, but it's a fun way that we can change words to show different meanings.
