ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Methanethiol

Methanethiol is a stinky gas that is made up of some little tiny particles called molecules. These molecules are very small and you can't see them with your eyes because they are too tiny. Methanethiol smells like a really bad egg or sometimes like decayed fish.

Sometimes there are things in the environment called bacteria that can make methanethiol in places where there is no oxygen. This is why sometimes when you go to the beach you smell something funny because bacteria create methanethiol in the water.

Methanethiol can be dangerous if you breathe in a lot of it because it can hurt your lungs, but usually, it is not harmful in most situations. People use methanethiol for some things, like making chemicals or gases that are used to make things like batteries. It's also used in the production of certain types of food like cheese, onions and certain fruits.

If you ever come across the smell of something like bad eggs (methanethiol) and you're not sure what it is, tell someone else who might know what to do. It's always better to be safe than sorry!
