ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Metre Convention

Okay kiddo, so imagine you are playing with your toy cars and you want to measure how far they can go. You use a ruler or tape measure to measure the distance from the starting point to the ending point.

But did you know that people from different countries used to use different rulers and measurements? This made it hard for people to understand each other when they talked about distances.

So, a long time ago, some really smart people got together and decided to create a universal system of measurement. They called it the Metric System or Metre Convention. It is based on the number 10, which is easy to use because we have 10 fingers!

In the Metric System, everything is measured in meters, which is a unit of length. For example, if you wanted to measure how long your toy car track is, you could use a ruler or a tape measure that shows meters.

And the great thing is, no matter where you go in the world, people will use the same measurement system! So if you ever travel to another country and want to know how long something is, you can use the Metric System and everyone will understand you. Cool, right?
