ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Micro-inequity

Micro-inequity is when someone is treated unfairly in a small way that might not seem important, but can add up over time to make them feel hurt, excluded or different.

Imagine you and your friends are playing a game and you get left out every time. This might seem small at first, but if it keeps happening it can make you feel like you don't belong, and maybe even like you're not as good as your friends. That's a kind of micro-inequity.

Another example is when someone mispronounces your name or doesn't try to say it correctly. That might seem small, but it can make you feel like your name (and by extension, you) are not important.

People might experience micro-inequities because of their race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, abilities, or any other characteristic that makes them different from others.

It's important to try to be aware of and avoid micro-inequities because they can deeply affect a person's sense of self-worth and belonging. Remembering to treat everyone with respect, kindness and fairness can help make the world a more inclusive and welcoming place for everyone.
