ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Minimum efficiency reporting value

Okay kiddo, have you ever heard of a thing called air conditioning or heating? It's what keeps our house warm in the winter and cool in the summer. But did you know that the air we breathe also goes through these machines?

When the air goes through an air conditioning or heating unit, it picks up little things like dust, pollen, and even tiny bugs! Yuck! That's why we have something called a filter. The filter catches all those things and makes the air we breathe cleaner and healthier.

But not all filters are made the same. Some are better at catching all those little bugs and things. That's where something called Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) comes in.

MERV is like a grade for filters. It tells us how good a filter is at catching all those little bugs and things in the air. Filters are given a number between 1 to 20, with 20 being the best.

So when we want our air conditioning or heating to work really well, we want to make sure we have a filter with a high MERV number. That way, we can breathe cleaner and healthier air, just like you like.
